As autumn sets in and the evenings grow darker, excitement builds for Halloween, Bonfire Night, and festive winter gatherings. Unfortunately, this season also brings a surge in burglaries. Over half of all UK break-ins (52%) take place between October and March. According to data from Origin, the UK’s leading manufacturer of aluminium windows and doors, Monday, 28th October—the day after the clocks go back—is the single most vulnerable date for homeowners. The earlier onset of darkness gives opportunistic thieves more cover before families settle into winter routines.

Recent analysis of data from 41 police forces across England and Wales revealed that 864 burglaries were reported on that date alone in 2023. The trend is clear: as nights lengthen and lights go on earlier, homes left empty or unguarded become easy targets.

When Do Most Burglaries Happen in the UK?

Although Christmas and New Year’s Eve might seem the riskiest times for burglary, data suggests otherwise. Findings from a Freedom of Information (FOI) report show that burglaries actually peak after the clocks change, particularly around late October. Only 15% of those surveyed correctly identified this as the period of greatest risk—most believed crime rates climb later in the festive season. The sudden loss of daylight and disrupted routines give burglars the perfect opportunity to strike while homeowners are adjusting to the time change.

High-Risk Dates for Home Break-Ins

Several notable dates stand out for increased criminal activity.

  • Bonfire Night (5th November): Burglary rates rise by around 25%, as fireworks and festivities mask unusual noises.

  • New Year’s Eve: Homes are often left unlocked or unattended due to social gatherings.

  • Halloween: Though typically not high for burglary, it records the highest level of property damage due to vandalism and pranks.

Together, these dates mark a critical period for heightened security awareness.

One in Three Homeowners Leave Doors or Windows Unlocked

The darker months bring a worrying lapse in home security. Origin’s national survey revealed that one in three UK homeowners regularly leave doors or windows unlocked—even overnight.

  • 9% admit to doing this often or always overnight.

  • 8% say they do so sometimes.

  • 11% will even leave doors or windows open when popping out briefly.

This complacency undermines even advanced security systems. In fact, 60% of burglaries occur while occupants are at home, proving that proximity doesn’t equal safety. As Origin security expert Dave Ginger notes, prioritising robust locks and secure window designs is an essential first step in protecting your property as days grow shorter.

Are Standard uPVC Windows Secure?

While locking up is important, the strength of your windows also matters. Origin’s data highlights that many UK homes rely on dated uPVC windows lacking modern safety features:

  • 60% lack multipoint locks

  • 76% don’t include night vents

  • 79% are missing opening restrictors

  • 85% use standard (non-laminated) glass

  • 97% don’t use any form of security film

Standard uPVC frames can shift over time and are more easily tampered with compared to premium aluminium alternatives like Origin Aluminium Windows. Multipoint locks secure the frame at various points, making forced entry far more difficult. Night vents also allow safe airflow while keeping windows partially secured, and restrictors prevent full openings that could let intruders in.

UK Burglary Hotspots

Burglary data from 2023 shows that incidents are heavily concentrated in major urban regions. London, Greater Manchester, and West Yorkshire account for around 37% of all reported cases. Other high-risk areas include Thames Valley, Lancashire, and Hampshire. The density of housing, easy transport links, and anonymity in large cities make them prime targets—but rural areas are far from immune. Interestingly, rural residents were found to leave their homes unlocked more frequently than city dwellers.

Strengthen Your Home with Origin Aluminium Windows

Investing in high-quality, secure products can significantly reduce your burglary risk. Origin Aluminium Windows are made from premium-grade aluminium—a strong, low-maintenance material that resists warping and supports advanced locking systems. These windows can be specified to meet PAS 24 and Secured by Design standards, both endorsed by UK police for proven protection against attempted break-ins.

Built-in features include multipoint locks, restricted openings for child safety, and laminated or toughened glass options—balancing style, security, and durability.

As Dave Ginger puts it:

“It’s not just about keeping the cold out—it’s about keeping your family safe.”

Practical Steps to Burglar-Proof Your Home

If replacing your windows or doors isn’t an immediate option, small upgrades and habits can still make a big difference:

  • Always lock doors and windows before bed and when leaving home.

  • Use timer switches or smart bulbs to make your home appear occupied.

  • Ensure outdoor lighting activates automatically at sunset.

  • Apply privacy or security film to obscure interior views from intruders.

  • Install visible CCTV or doorbell cameras to deter crime.

  • When ventilating, use night vents or restrictors to maintain airflow without compromising safety.

  • Keep doors locked during gatherings or parties to prevent opportunistic theft.

A few simple adjustments this season can greatly reduce your risk and keep your home secure through the darker winter months.
