Standoff Glass Balustrades
Overview
A standoff glass balustrade holds each glass panel away from the edge of a stair, landing or balcony on stainless steel standoffs, so the glass appears to float. It is a striking choice where you want the balustrade to be a design feature.
Because the fixings sit on the face of the structure rather than on the floor, standoff balustrades keep the full width of a stair or balcony free, and suit feature staircases, balconies and external façades.
We survey the structure, check it can take the fixings, and measure precisely so every panel lines up. The glass is made and drilled to size, then our own team installs the balustrade carefully and cleanly.
Every installation is backed by our 10-year insurance-backed guarantee and the manufacturer's product guarantee. We install glass balustrades across London, Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey. Compare our frameless and post and glass balustrades, or book a free design consultation.

The fittings we use
We use BM Architectural's stainless steel standoff and handrail fittings, made by a UK manufacturer based in Sheffield.
Standoffs: threaded and adjustable standoffs in grade 316 stainless steel, fixed through the glass into the edge of the stair, landing or slab.
Glass: toughened laminated safety glass, drilled to suit the fixings and specified for the loading of your application.
Handrail: a handrail or top rail can be added where the design or loading requires it.
Standoff glass balustrades: frequently asked questions
Where can a standoff balustrade be used?
On staircases, landings, mezzanines, balconies and external façades, anywhere with a solid edge to fix into. We check the structure at survey.
How high does it need to be?
In homes, guarding is typically at least 900mm high indoors, such as on stairs and landings, and at least 1100mm on balconies and outdoor edges.
Why grade 316 stainless steel?
Grade 316 is the marine grade of stainless steel. It resists corrosion better than grade 304, which makes it the right choice outdoors.
Do I need a handrail?
Depending on the glass specification, the loading and where it is installed, a handrail may be required. We confirm this at survey.
Standoff or frameless channel?
Standoffs fix to the face of the structure and make the glass appear to float. A frameless channel system fixes into the floor or the side of a slab and hides the fixings completely.
