Picture Windows

Overview

An aluminium picture window is a fixed pane of glass in a slim frame, designed to do one job well: frame the view and fill the room with daylight. Because it doesn't open, the glass can be bigger and the frame slimmer than an opening window of the same size.

Picture windows work well facing a garden, in extensions and stairwells, and next to opening windows where you still need fresh air. Keep the glass completely clear for a minimal look, or add horizontal or vertical bars for a Georgian or steel-look style.

Every project starts with a free design visit, where we help you choose the style, colour, glazing and hardware, then take a full measure for an accurate quote. A surveyor checks every detail before anything is made, and our own fitting team installs your windows carefully and leaves your home clean.

You receive a FENSA certificate, a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee and the manufacturer's product guarantee. We supply and fit aluminium picture windows across London, Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey. Compare them with our gable windows, or book a free design consultation.

Origin window systems we install

We make picture windows on both of Origin's window systems.

  • Origin OW-70 Slimline: Origin's slimmer window system, with a 65mm sightline and U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²K. Fixed panes up to 4.8m².

  • Origin OW-80 Premium: a flush frame with a timber-like finish, a 91mm sightline and U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K with Aerogel. Fixed panes up to 7m².

Both systems are tested to PAS 24 and Secured by Design accredited, come in over 150 RAL colours with dual-colour and textured finishes, and carry Origin's guarantee of up to 20 years, alongside our 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.

Picture windows: frequently asked questions

How large can a picture window be?

On Origin's OW-80 system a single fixed pane can be up to 7m², and up to 4.8m² on the OW-70. Larger openings can be split into several panes.

Can I combine a picture window with opening windows?

Yes. Picture windows are often designed alongside casement or tilt and turn windows so the room gets both the view and ventilation.

How do I clean a fixed window?

From the outside, like any fixed glazing. For hard-to-reach upper floors, tilt and turn windows open inwards so both sides can be cleaned from inside.

Do picture windows meet Building Regulations?

Replacement windows in England need a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better. Origin's systems achieve 1.2 W/m²K or lower, and as we are FENSA registered you receive a certificate confirming compliance.

Do I need planning permission?

Replacing windows with ones of a similar appearance is usually permitted development for houses. Flats, listed buildings and homes in conservation areas with an Article 4 direction may need consent, so check with your council first.
